Photo Compositing
This form of illustration uses photos and digitally created assets to create conceptual or photorealistic images.
Known by many names such as photo compositing, photo retouching, photo montage, photo Illustration and matte painting, this art form is used extensively in editorial, advertising and entertainment.
Most of these images have been created in collaboration with photographer Trina Koster for See it, Be it, STEM it (www.seeitbeitstemit.com), a project designed to encourage young women to work towards STEM careers (Science, Tech/Trades, Engineering, and Mathematics). The project creates promotional tools for teachers, parents and career counsellors to show young women across cultures that women who look like them succeed and thrive in STEM careers. The role models we photograph are change-makers showing up strong in the academic, business, and entrepreneurial spaces.
All of these images are photo composite images, with the people shot separately on a green screen (or white, blue or pink screen as needed) with custom lighting to match the digital environment we’re creating. We use a combo of custom photography, stock photography and vector art, hand-painted elements, and AI-generated elements. If some just look like an ordinary photo taken in one shot, I’ll take that as a compliment!
